Character Customization

When the game starts, you will be asked to make your first decisions, regarding your playing character.

First, select the character’s gender: male or female.

Select your experience. This is a very important step, because if you choose Action, you won’t be able to customize your character’s appearance or class. Furthermore, you won’t get any Paragon or Renegade points, and some dialogues will be missing.

If you choose, Story, the combat difficulty is reduced, so you can focus on the Mass Effect 3 storyline. The final option is Role-Playing, which offers the original and traditional Mass Effect experience.

Select your character’s name and appearance. You can customize your character if you wish, or you can use the default appearance.

The next important step is to choose the character’s class. Mass Effect 3 features the following classes: Soldier, Infiltrator, Vanguard, Sentinel, Adept and Engineer.

It is important to know that based on the class you pick during this step; you will gain or lose access to some of your character’s abilities.  Each class includes different abilities and powers, most of them revealed during this step.

Make sure you read the descriptions and scroll down to see the powers available for each Mass Effect 3 class.

During the next steps you must confirm the details of your personal history: Spacer, Colonist or Earthborn; as well as your service history: Sole Survivor, War Hero or Ruthless.

The last step allows you to pick a significant combat loss: Kaidan Alenko or Ashley Williams. You should know that the character you pick will not appear in the game.

After you customize your character, confirm your setting and watch the following cutscene.

NOTE: Our Mass Effect 3 walkthrough was created while using the following settings:

Significant Combat Loss: Ashley Williams

Prologue

The game starts with a cutscene showing Admiral Hackett and Anderson, in the command center. The Reaper invasion is imminent, and Earth is unprepared for it.

Despite all warnings coming from Shepard, the Reapers remained a myth…until now.  Watch the next cutscene and follow the dialogue between Admiral Anderson who called you, since your experience with the Reapers is vast.

Talk to the Admiral and tell him that you are certain that the Reapers will invade Earth. When you reach the Alliance Council, speak in front of its members and get ready: the invasion of Earth begins!

After the cutscene, you will assume the role of Commander Shepard. Press the Right Thumbstick to display your current objective.

Objective: Follow Anderson to the Spaceport

At this point, the only weapon you can use is the M3 Predator I pistol and several powers that depend on your character’s class.

Hold RB to access them. Follow Anderson and learn the game’s basic controls. Hold A to run and to jump from one ledge to another, and to leap across the gap.

Push the Left Thumbstick forward to climb the ladder and continue to stay near Anderson.  The first enemies you will encounter are some Husks.

Take them out, and learn how to get to cover, then follow Anderson. Eventually, you will run out of ammo, and you have to melee your enemies.

Approach a Husk and press B. Hold and release B for a heavy melee attack. When the area is cleared the Reapers will destroy the building near you, creating an exit point.

Objective: Find a way forward

Enter the destroyed building and check the room to the right for a Med Kit. Now head towards the door and heavy melee the Husk. New Codex Entry: Omi-Tool Weapons.

Open the door and proceed. During the next cutscene you will see a young boy, and you will be able to earn your first Paragon or Renegade points.

Paragon or Renegade Points

During the game, your conversations with some characters will give you the chance to earn Paragon or Renegade points. You can’t earn both of them, therefore you must choose.

Most conversations have two options. The first one will increase the amount of Paragon points, while the second will increase the amount of Renegade Points. The differences between these two options are important and will modify the gameplay. A Paragon centered character is a positive and friendly one. You will have more positive options and your squad members will be open to you.

If you are kind you can unlock the Charm ability, and later in the game, new events. Additionally, you will be able to skip some battles.

A  Renegade centered character is a ruthless commander, who performs mean and cruel actions.  The members of your party will see you as a cruel leader, but you will be able to intimidate them. Some characters prefer a Renegade commander, while others will dislike you.

If you prefer this kind of character, and you focus on earning Renegade points, you will be able to see how Shepard’s face will change in time. More scars will appear on his face, and the color of his eyes will change.

NOTE: During the game, we will focus on creating a Paragon character.

Talk to the boy and offer to help him (Paragon), or send him away (Renegade). Now, follow Anderson and speak to him.

Watch the next cutscene and you will reach a new area. New Codex Entries: Citadel and Specters.

Pick up the heat sinks in front of you, to replenish your ammo, and then jump through the window. Follow Anderson, and eventually, you will fall off the building, after a huge explosion.

Continue to advance, and in the next area you will see some friendly characters. Get ready to kill some Cannibals.

Take cover and make sure you aim for their mouths. Take them out and talk to the injured soldier. Cross the bridge you have created and go left.

To your right, near a ramp, salvage the Med Kit, then take cover and kill all Cannibals. Make sure you replenish your ammo, and then go right and cross the water using the bridge created.

Objective: Find the Radio

Follow Anderson and he will find the Radio, after you cross the bridge, to the right. Before activating the radio, pick up the M-8 Avenger I assault rifle and equip it.

Press A to activate the radio and get ready, because after the cutscene you will be attacked.

Objective: Hold position for extraction

Take cover immediately and try to kill as many Cannibals as you can. Remember that a Cannibal’s weak point is his mouth. For increased efficiency use Shepard’s Adrenaline Rush to slow down your opponents.

This ability will also help you save ammo and kill more Cannibals. The fight ends when you run out of ammo on both weapons.

Watch the next cutscene showing Normandy SR-2 coming to pick you up.

Talk to Anderson and he will reinstate you as Commander. Now, it is time to take care of those Reapers and take back Earth.

The first part of the prologue ends here. After the cutscene you will start Priority: Mars.
