After we learned last week about the partnership between Square Enix and Marvel Entertainment to develop Avengers based games, new light has been shed on one of their other projects, a Guardians of the Galaxy video game – yes, you read that right!
Tomb Raider’s Crystal Dynamics is working on The Avengers Project, being helped by a small team from Eidos Montreal who are behind the Deus Ex franchise. Which bears the question, what’s happening with Deus Ex now?
Square Enix declared that Eidos took almost five years to develop Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and because of underwhelming profits the series is now “on hiatus”.
Mankind Divided’s story became too large and complicated during development and many elements had to be cut in the final game. This left us with some unresolved story threads which were to be addressed in a third installment, completing the trilogy begun by Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
Now a new DX game – or a follow-up – may never happen. Note that the team hasn’t released the last piece of Mankind Divided DLC, but those DLCs are focused on standalone stories, not on answering questions we might have after the ending of the main game.

As of right now the majority of Eidos Montreal members are working on the next Tomb Raider game – Shadow of the Tomb Raider if the last year’s leak is to be believed – which is odd considering Crystal Dynamics helmed the first two games.
But once they’re done, the studio will focus on the unnamed Guardians of the Galaxy video game that is currently in the “early stages of development”. And we probably won’t hear more about this in the near future, since Square Enix already confirmed it won’t talk about The Avengers and other Marvel games until 2018.
Both Eurogamer and Kotaku confirmed the rumors around Deus Ex and Guardians of the Galaxy.

So Eidos Montreal is on Shadow of the Tomb Raider and multiple Marvel projects (Avengers and another). Not much room for another series…

Sad and good news at the same time…
This announcement is rather interesting considering there is another Guardians of the Galaxy game in the works by Telltale Games – but not unexpected. However, theirs will be focused on storytelling, similar to all games developed by them.
I said not unexpected because James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is coming in May. Given the success of the first movie it’s a no-brainer Marvel is seeking to expand the franchise to AAA games.
Are you excited about an action-based Guardians of the Galaxy video game? We sure are!
