An Apocalypse Now video game adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola’s legendary Vietnam War movie has been spotted on Kickstarter.
The Apocalypse Now movie – loosely based on the Heart of Darkness novel – was released on August 15, 1979 in the USA. The imdb.com synopsis is:
“During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard is sent on a dangerous mission into Cambodia to assassinate a renegade colonel who has set himself up as a god among a local tribe.”
For the development of the Apocalypse Now video game, Francis Ford Coppola partnered with American Zoetrope, a company he founded with George Lucas. Other partners are: Framestore Ventures, Ringling College of Art and Design, Malibu Road Pictures LLC and Stoutlight Incorporated.
Coppola gave his approval for the game to be developed, but he’s not the one making it. However, heavy names from the gaming industry are involved in the project.
Rob Auten is the lead writer, who co-wrote Gears of War: Judgment and Battlefield: Hardline. The executive producer role is held by Lawrence Liberty, who was involved as executive producer or studio director in titles like: Fallout: New Vegas, DC Universe Online, and The Witcher.
On directing is Montgomery Markland, who was a producer on two successful crowdfunding titles: Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera. Obsidian Entertainment’s design director Josh Sawyer will provide counsel to the team.
Apocalypse Now Video Game. Why Kickstarter?
In order to fulfill his vision, Francis Ford Coppola said a traditional game publisher system won’t work. That’s why he sought funding outside game studios, because Apocalypse Now doesn’t fit in any defined genre.
Kevin McCann pointed that “We’re not going to be making Apocalypse Now into a rampaging first-person shooter.”
The game will be first-person indeed, but it doesn’t rely on mindless shooting, it is a roleplaying game, “with a psychological horror narrative and survival elements”.
In the game you take the reins of Captain Benjamin Willard, with the mission to assassinate Colonel Walter E. Kurtz who has gone rogue.
Important resources like food, water, ammo, weapons, first aid supplies, medicine, drugs, gasoline are limited, hence you have to get crafty when traversing the jungle.
Gun-blazing is bad in this game and will get you killed fast, “this is not Call of Duty in Vietnam”.
It’s not about dialogue decisions like a traditional RPG, your actions and postures are the ones that count.
Do you take a stealth approach or choose the gun and knife as a stone-cold killer? Your team will notice if you help them when they’re in need or if you kill too many people.
Bottom line, the team describes the Apocalypse Now video game as “an immersive, psychedelic horror RPG”.
Right now, on Kickstarter, you can back the project by pledging an amount from $25, to get a copy of the game, – this reward is gone already – up to $10,000, which includes way more bonuses and copies of the game.
The “problem” is that the expected delivery date of the Apocalypse Now video game is October 2020!
Until then, if you haven’t watched the Apocalypse Now movie, like me, buy the 3-disc edition dubbed Full Disclosure Edition on Amazon for $20.45.
As for the game, will you back the project? Do you like the idea presented by the development team? Drop a comment below.
