Just like The Eternal Battle and Hatred Symbolized, this quest can be played no matter who you picked at the end of the first act of the game, but the actions are different.
The Death Symbolized quest walkthrough below is divided in two parts, based on the decisions you have made so far in the game.
If you allied with Iorveth, while you play The Eternal Battle, you will have to talk to Philippa regarding the artifacts you have to find.
One of them is the Dunn Banners standard. Additional information regarding this item can be acquired by talking to Cecil Burdon in Vergen.
“One of the artifacts needed to lift the curse from the battlefield was to symbolize death. Having no idea what he was to look for, the witcher took Philippas advice and decided to talk to Cecil Burdon.
Vergens alderman knew a lot about the battle between the Kaedweni and Aedirnian armies, so he would likely give Geralt a good lead.”
When to start
After With Flickering Heart
The first thing you have to do is to see Cecil Burdon and hear his story. You will find that the standard is in the catacombs while the sword (Hatred Symbolized quest) is carried by Saskia.
If you work on this quest after you finish With Flickering Heart side-quest, you already know where the catacombs are located.
When you reach your destination, fight your way to the bottom where you will meet a guardian.
Note: Inside the catacombs use the Aard Sing to destroy the brick walls and clear the way.
During the conversation with the guardian your best choice is to lie and tell him that you served the Banner; however be very careful because you will have to answer a series of questions Make sure you give the following answers, to solve the puzzle:
First answer: You got it wrong
Second answer: Menno Coehoorn
Third answer: Coehoorn is dead
Fourth answer: Vandergrift and Seltkirk
Fifth answer: Biggerhorn took me prisoner
Give these answers and the ghost will believe you that you served the Dunn Banner. Next, get the standard and the Sword of Dun Banner from the sarcophagus to the left, to complete the quest.
At this point, you should return to Vergen and focus on other quests. Remember that Hatred Symbolized requires the sword Saskia carries, which means that you have to finish A Matter of Life and Death to get it.
