It’s official, production on Tomb Raider movie has begun, starring Alicia Vikander in the role of Lara Croft.
The announcement came from director Roar Uthaug, who posted the following picture on his Instagram account on January 23:
Usually movies based on video games have the tendency to be mediocre at best, but we’re talking about Tomb Raider now, so that’s worth getting excited about.
As a reference, I had high hopes for the Assassin’s Creed movie, and while it was decent, for me it didn’t deliver. They could’ve execute it a lot better, given the source material they had from Ubisoft’s games.
When Angelina Jolie had the role of Lara Croft we saw a version of her in which she was portrayed as a veteran explorer. The Tomb Raider movie reboot, however, takes inspiration from the recent video games, thus we get to see an original story – back to the roots!
Daisy Ridley, known better for her Rey role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was also approached to play the artifact-hunter Lara Croft, but Alicia Vikander was the top choice, as we reported last year.
Since this is a game-to-film adaptation, I must confess that I am a big fan of the Tomb Raider game series, especially of the last two installments, the Tomb Raider reboot and its sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider. The latter was an Xbox One / Xbox 360 timed-exclusive – being launched on PC after a couple months, and it was released on PlayStation 4 almost one year later.
Tomb Raider is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 16, 2018.
