Sonya Blade or Lieutenant Sonya Blade is a Mortal Kombat character and one of the fighters that debuted in the first title of the series.
Sonya Blade is a member of the Outer World Investigation Agency, therefore she is a Special Forces unit, just like Jax Briggs, who is her direct superior.
In the Mortal Kombat series of video games, Sonya’s adventures start when she pursues Kano the leader of Black Dragon organization, and one of the biggest criminals alive.
Sonya and her unit arrive in a harbor and follow Kano to Shang Tsung’s ship, which eventually transports both of them to an unknown island.
As soon as Sonya and her unit arrive on the island they are ambushed by Shang Tsung’s forces.
As a loyal leader, Sonya agrees to participate in the first Mortal Kombat tournament and makes a deal with Shang Tsung, who agrees to spare Sonya’s unit.
In the Mortal Kombat tournament Sonya is defeated by Liu Kang, and, against her will, she teams up with Johnny Cage and Kano, helping them to defeat Goro.
During the fight, the island is destroyed, and Sonya as well as her enemy, Kano, end up as prisoners in the Outworld.
Mortal Kombat 9, or 2011, presents Sonya side by side with her superior, Jax Briggs, both of them trying to find and arrest Kano.
While this may look like Sonya’s ultimate goal, her in-game biography reveals that she has one additional quest to solve, regarding her family:
“As a girl, Sonya idolized her father, a U.S. Marine. When he embarked on a covert operation and never returned, she vowed to honor his memory. She joined the Marines and pushed herself hard, quickly rising in rank. Sonya’s impulsiveness didn’t win her many friends, but her skills and loyalty gained the respect and admiration of all who fought beside her. Though she has never given up her quest to uncover the truth behind her father’s disappearance, she realizes that she might never see him again. Now Sonya finds herself caught up in the mysterious Mortal Kombat tournament. Like her father, she too could become a casualty of war.”
