Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII The Avid Reader is a decision-based side quest available in Luxerion, and also a quest that can be failed. The Avid Reader starts in Luxerion but to be able to complete it, you also have to travel to Yusnaan.
In order to play The Avid Reader featured in the video game, you have to complete the fifth main-quest (A Hunter In Light And Shadow), and you must find Ranulph.
Since the side-quest can be failed, and the decisions you make affect the outcome, as well as the rewards you receive, the following guide presents the two possible options available, allowing you to select the one that suits your needs.
Description: “Every day, on Pilgrim’s Passage, near South Station, a quiet dignified gentleman called Ranulph can be seen engrossed in his journal and nibbling on muffins brought to him by the baker, Marlon. Ranulph’s life is contented and ordered, marred only by one small wrinkle – the notebook containing the entries from the first 50 years of his life is missing. Perhaps Lightning can find it for him.
Requirements: Start at 5 AM, after Main Quest 1-5: A Hunter In Light And Shadow.
Complete the quest before 11 PM.
Rewards: 900 Gil, Maximum HP + 60, Strength + 6, Magic + 4, Dull Grudge Knife Adornment
If all the requirements above have been met, and you are ready to begin The Avid Reader, open your map and go to the South Station in Luxerion.
From there, head east to the Pilgrim’s Passage, and at a table you will see a man with a mustache, reading a book.
Note: Ranulph spawns after 5 AM, and leaves Pilgrim’s Passage at 11 PM.
Talk to him and you will be asked to find Ranulph’s Journal; however, in order to advance, first you must locate another NPC named Mitka.
From Ranulph’s location, head west and descend the stairs, then go left around the building, looking for a blonde woman wearing a green dress. Talk to the Wandering Woman, to get additional details about Mitka. Now, open your map again, and head NW towards The Residences and enter The Avenue.
Locate the Chocobo Emporium, and right across the street in a dark corner is a masked woman. She is Mitka, but she only spawns between 5 AM and 1 AM.
After you talk to Mitka, you will be sent to the Wall of Joy in the area known as The Warren. Since the gates open at midnight, you can address other side-quests until then, but when the gates open, go to the North Station and follow the alley north from there to get to the Wall of Joy.
Here you will have to find a new NPC named Reddick, at the base of a ramp, with his back against a wall. Talk to Reddick and ask him about the journal, to receive Reddick’s Letter.
Now, it is time to visit Yusnaan. Go back to the North Station in Luxerion and take the train to Yusnaan. Alternatively, you can teleport if you already visited the second city. When you get to the Yusnaan train station, facing the large Plaza, head left to The Banquet of The Lord restaurant.
Follow the stairs up and inside the restaurant you will find a girl with a ponytail. Give her Reddick’s Letter and in exchange you will get Ranulph’s Journal. After the cutscene you will have to make an important decision. Your first option is to read Ranulph’s Journal, which will result in failing the current quest, but allows you to start a new side-quest named To Save The Sinless.
If you don’t read Ranulph’s Journal, you will be able to finish The Avid Reader side-quest, but To Save The Sinless will remain locked, and you won’t be able to play it.
Regarding the rewards received for these two side-quests, the payout for To Save The Sinless is bigger, and it also includes the Dark Knight Garb.
Assuming that you don’t want to play To Save The Sinless, all you have to do, is to avoid reading the journal and take it back to Ranulph.
