Injustice: Gods Among Us The Joker Character Guide

In the fourth chapter of Injustice: Gods Among Us, the main character is The Clown Prince of Crime, also known as The Joker.

Following the events of the third chapter, focused on Aquaman, the action moves to the Insurgency HQ, and then on the streets of the Metropolis City controlled by Superman’s Regime.

In fact, Joker’s chapter continues the events of the first chapter in the video game, after Batman escapes Superman’s troops using one of his smoke bombs. At the same time Joker, who was defeated by The Dark Knight, manages to run away.

To understand Joker’s role in the video game, it is important to outline several facts that occurred in the Injustice: Gods Among Us comic book released on January 5, 2013.

The comic book serves as a prequel to the video game developed by NetherRealm Studios. The action in the comic book takes place several year before the events of the video game, after Joker kills Jonathan Crane, also known as Scarecrow; in order to steal Scarecrow’s fear toxin.

The Joker also murders several scientists in the S.T.A.R. Labs, while they were working with Kryptonite. Helped by Harley Quinn, Joker lures Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane, to the docks of Metropolis, where he kills Olsen and kidnaps Lois Lane.

Moments later, Joker highjacks a nuclear submarine but he is quickly tracked down by Superman. The comic book also shows Harley Quinn and Joker performing a surgery on Lois Lane, as well as Superman who is intoxicated with a mix of kryptonite and fear toxin when he reaches Joker’s location.

Under the effect created by the powerful toxin, Superman sees Doomsday and flies away into the space, to kill his nemesis. Joker tries to escape the submarine but he is captured by Green Lantern using one of his constructs.  Soon after, Wonder Woman and Batman arrive, the latter being carried by The Flash.

While The Joker continues to mock Batman, The Dark Knight investigates the submarine, only to discover that nothing unusual happened.

His dialogue with Joker regarding Lois Lane’s location reveals the fact that a nuclear bomb was placed in Metropolis and the remote control is in fact Lois, the trigger being her heart.

The dialogue continues and Joker asks Batman if he knew that Lois was pregnant. The Caped Crusader understands that nothing can stop an imminent explosion in Metropolis, and knocks out The Joker.

In the meantime, the fear toxin fades away and Superman realizes that Doomsday was just a vision, and that in his arms he was carrying Lois Lane. His beloved dies along with his unborn child, activating the nuclear warhead in Metropolis.

The events continue to unfold in Gotham Prison, where Batman takes Joker to the interrogation room, wishing to find out why Joker planned such an act against Superman and Metropolis.

Joker explains that he was never able to beat Batman, so he wanted to move the game to a lower level. During the conversation Joker asks Batman if he thinks that Superman will recover after his loss.

Batman is confident that The Man of Steel will recuperate, but Joker assures him that he doesn’t believe so. The wall of the cell where Joker is being held is suddenly destroyed by Kal-El, who throws Batman away, impaling The Joker, thus, breaking his sacred code.

Joker’s part in Injustice: Gods Among Us begins with a cutscene showing him on the streets of Metropolis. As always, he is supervised by Batman and a clash between the two enemies is inevitable. At the end of the fight, while trying to perform one of his tricks, The Joker notices Hawkgirl and Yellow Lantern approaching; therefore, he decides to postpone the “special moment”, by hiding on an alley nearby.

Batman is captured by Hawkgirl and Yellow Lantern, who were sent by Superman to find all members Insurgency members. While Batman is carried away by Hawkgirl and Yellow Lantern, The Joker encounters Harley Quinn who is upset that someone is trying to impersonate Mr. J.

After Joker demonstrates that he is Harley’s beloved, the action moves to Superman’s HQ where Batman is guarded by the Yellow Lantern.

Using his vision, Superman finds out that his prisoner isn’t the Batman which belongs to his universe. On the other side of the city, Harley takes Joker back to his gang and after a short speech; the Joker gives everyone the Happy Pill, a drug which is also administrated by Superman to his troops, to increase their strength.

Joker’s motivational speech is interrupted by Hawkgirl and the alternate version of Nightwing, leading Superman’s soldiers.

Both of them are defeated by The Joker and they flee away the moment Batman, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman and Aquaman enter the scene. Joker informs the group that Superman captured Batman from the parallel universe, and Harleen (Harley Quinn) offers to help them to defeat Superman.

Unfortunately for Joker, he is not included in their plans, and Batman takes him away. In the parallel dimension, Superman, The Flash and Cyborg try to find a way to reach their friends, who fight against the Regime.

Using Cyborg’s skills, they plan to pull all superheroes back to their dimension, yet this requires a lot of work. Joker’s chapter ends with Lex Luthor, and Deathstroke who decided to enter the fight since he is also hunted by Superman.

Costumes and Skins

Even if Joker is the main antagonist since he caused the destruction of Metropolis, an interested aspect that must be mentioned, is that one of his alternate costumes available in the video game, is Joker’s Insurgency Costume.

Insurgency Costumes, can be unlocked only by superheroes that joined Batman’s faction; therefore, his role in the video game is debatable.

Nevertheless, Joker remains a villain, and the second unlockable costume he can wear is the Arkham City Joker Costume that can be unlocked only by players who have pre-ordered the video game from Walmart, or those who have purchased the Arkham City Costume Pack DLC.

The Killing Joke DLC Costume Pack, adds three additional outfits for Joker: Tourist, Final Confrontation and Red Hood.
