In Dragon’s Dogma, after we complete the board-quest called Final Farewell, we can focus on a similar side-quest, named A Formless Foe.
A Formless Foe can be activated by checking the notice board in the Encampment, after we visit Gran Soren for the first time.
If we visit the Encampment again, we will be able to trigger several quests, and one of them is A Formless Foe.
This quest is similar to Final Farewell, meaning that we have to kill a specific number of creatures, but this time, these creatures are phantoms.
Details
Defeat 5 phantoms

“Brawn alone will not avail you against the likes of a phantom. Best you consider the vocation and skills of each member of your party afore engaging their kind.”
Walkthrough
To finish A Formless Foe in Dragons Dogma, we must cross the river that separates Gran Soren and the northern Gransys. Eventually, we enter Deos Hills, and from there if we travel NW, we should see the Catacombs.
To find and kill 5 phantoms, we should check this area during the night. It is a dangerous place, so we make sure our heroes are well equipped.
If we want to kill the phantoms during the day, we must enter the dungeon, and look for them on the second floor. Inside the catacombs we can earn additional XP points, and we can find valuable items, as well as money.
Combat Tip: To kill a phantom in Dragons Dogma, we must know that a normal weapon wont hurt it unless the phantom possesses one of our party members(pawn/hero).
In this case, we must hurry up and attack the creature, or call for help; because if a phantom possesses a character for a long time, that character will eventually die (hero), or will return to the rift (pawn). Spells are also effective, which means that the presence of a mage, is vital.
After we kill five phantoms outside or inside the Catacombs, A Formless Foe ends.
