Matanzas is one of the secondary areas featured in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, and it must be explored to find all collectibles in the video game.
The zone should be accessed after you retrieve the treasure map from Tortuga Island, because the coordinates on the map and the digging spot can be found in Matanzas.
Similar to Tortuga, Matanzas is a restricted area, being occupied by the British forces; therefore, you should focus on clearing the village, and then collect all items using the tips and the hints provided by the following AC4 video game guide.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Matanzas Chests Locations
Chest 1
The first chest is located west from the second AC4 Animus Fragment. You will find it in a small camp, close to a weapon rack.
Loot it to get 162 Reales and a gold chain (130 R).
Chest 2
The second chest is located near the building you can climb to synchronize the viewpoint in Matanzas.
Go around the building and you will find a campfire. Look for the chest close to the right wall, while standing in front of the said fire. The chest contains a silver ring (80 R) and 130 Reales.
Chest 3
For the third chest you will have to cross the swamp in the south-eastern part of the area. Look for it in the bushes and loot it to get 140 Reales and a silver bracelet (140 R).
Chest 4
The last chest in Matanzas is in the mansion located on the northern coast. Clear the area then go around the villa and look for it under the wooden structure you will find in the back.
The chest holds a pewter tea set (20 Reales) and 142 R.
Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Matanzas Animus Fragments Locations
Animus Fragment 1
The first Matanzas Animus Fragment marked on the map, is on the eastern side of the island, above a branch.
Since you can’t climb the tree where the collectible is located, you will have to jump on its branch, from the tree nearby. Climb until you reach the top, then jump towards the collectible.
Animus Fragment 2
The second fragment is north from the previous one, and close to a cliff. Go around the rocks, and while standing on the edge of the cliff, perform a Leap of Faith, aiming for the collectible and the haystack on the beach.
Animus Fragment 3
After you get the first chest, head towards the middle of the area to collect the final fragment. You will notice that it is in a tree that can’t be accessed from the ground.
Climb the nearby guard tower and jump on the tree’s branch. Next, climb another level to get the collectable.

Secret: Letter The only AC4 secret in Matanzas is a letter (On Leaving Home), located on the northern beach. The collectible is easy to find because it glows on the clean beach, and you will be able to spot it from distance.
