Fighting Duplicorns for Sturdy Helixhorns

Final Fantasy XV A Better Engine Blade III is the third and final FFXV side-quest you can start from Cid in Hammerhead in order to upgrade the Engine Blade.

Since A Better Engine Blade III requires the third version of the Engine Blade, you need to complete the previous side-quest named A Better Engine Blade II, and you also need a Sturdy Helixhorn which is the material Cid requires to transform the Engine Blade in Ultima Blade, the most powerful version of Noctis’s primary weapon.

In other words, you can play A Better Engine Blade III in FFXV, after you finish A Better Engine Blade II; however, getting a Sturdy Helixhorn is not as easy as you think.

This is probably the most annoying task you receive from Cindy’s grandfather, Cid.

Assuming you have followed our walkthrough for A Better Engine Blade II, approach Cid and start the next quest, but be advised that you won’t be able to complete it if Cid is working on other upgrades.

After you start A Better Engine Blade III side-quest, check your inventory first because maybe you already have a Sturdy Helixhorn. For this walkthrough, we will assume that you didn’t find one, or you have sold it.

In Final Fantasy XV only two creatures drop Helixhorns. These creatures are known as Duplicorns and Leukorns. The tricky part; however, is to get a Helixhorn from them.

So, the moment you start the quest, open your map and locate Old Lestallum. If you can’t reach the outpost, you might want to advance the story in order to remove the Imperial blockades between Duscae and Cleigne.

Objective: Find a Helixhorn for Cid

Travel to Old Lestallum area, and visit the tipster at the local diner. Now, check the hunting quests he has available for you, and start The Last Spiracorns hunt.

Make sure that your party is prepared because it is a level 29 quest.

Next, open your inventory and equip Noctis with a double handed-sword, because to get a Helixhorn you actually have to cut it. The Helixhorn is an appendage and only two handed-swords can remove it.

Due to the low drop rate, we suggest using the Sword of the Wise Armiger (Legacy main-quest) which boosts the drop rate, or the Hardege Greatsword.

You can also boost the drop rate by eating a Mother & Chile Rice Bowl at a camp nearby. When you are ready, head to the marker on your map. Make sure that the hunt is selected in your quest log.

As you approach the area you will notice that there are two types of Spiracorns. Your main targets are the large ones, which are the Duplicorns.

The trick here is to lock on their horns and warp-attack them. Keep the lock-on button pushed and attack them only with a two-handed sword.

As mentioned above the drop rate is terrible and Crocked Helixhorns will not help you finish A Better Engine Blade III.

If you clear the area and the Helixhorn didn’t drop, return to the tipster and repeat the hunt. If you use this strategy and the suggested weapons you will eventually get a Helixhorn.

Objective: Give the Helixhorn to Cid

Once you get the item, return to Cid in Hammerhead. If he is not working on other upgrades, give him the Engine Blade II and the Helixhorn, then you will be sent away until the upgrade is finished.

Complete no more than 3 hunting quests or side-quests, then rest. In the morning, Cid will call Noctis and you will have to visit him again to pick up the Ultima Blade.
